Lizzie Manning ’13
During my last semester at Wes, I was feeling very inspired about my writing—inspired by my peers, whose talent blows me away; inspired by exploring new forms for me, like creative nonfiction and science writing. Having not just a professor, but a classroom of my peers critique my work in an honest and helpful way didn’t just help me grow as a writer, it was also fun. I found myself more willing to experiment with different forms and, much to my surprise, I discovered that I really enjoy creative nonfiction. Beyond that, I also took my love of creative writing outside the classroom by helping to edit the first online Wesleyan literary magazine.
As far as campus activities, I was a social media intern with University Relations, helping to manage Wesconnect’s Facebook and Twitter presence and live tweeting events like Reunion and Commencement and Homecoming/Family Weekend, so that alums who couldn’t come back to campus could feel like they were here. I also loved working at Wes Wings (campus café) because it’s extremely social and there’s such a fun staff community.
Post-Wes, I've interned with Glamour magazine in New York and very much ejoyed it. While I love the medium of print, I recognize that it's dying. I would love to be involved in this transitional time when a lot of print publications are becoming digital and the nature of publishing is changing.
