George Devries Klein ’54
Took geology to meet science requirement and because of my outdoor interests, chose to major in it. Was well mentored by Joe Webb Peoples and Rube Ross for what followed.
After earning MA and PhD in geology from the University of Kansas and Yale University, respectively, I have enjoyed a 53-year (and climbing) "post-doctoral" career as a researcher in an oil company, and faculty appointments at the Universities of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Illinois (@ Urban-Champaign). Received numerous awards for my research including an SEPM Best paper award, Japan Society for Promotion of Science Fellowship, Fulbright Research Fellowship, the Lawrence L. Sloss Award in sedimentary geology from the Geological Society of America, and a 'Geological Legends' Award from the Houston Geological Society. Since 1996, I have been a geological consultant in the greater Houston, TX, area, and despite my "age and experience" I still consult today.
Wesleyan opened my eyes to career and life opportunities I never imagined to experience and I have loved every minute of it.
