President Roth Talks Higher Ed with Delany '78, Weiner '87 P'18

July 20, 2016

On October 29, 2014, President Michael Roth joined Emmy Award-winning actress Dana Delany '78 and creator and executive producer of 'Mad Men' Matthew Weiner '87, P'18 in Los Angeles for a lively and provocative conversation about threats facing higher education.

The event, hosted by Jeremy Zimmer P'12 at the offices of United Talent Agency, was part of an ongoing series held around the country to bring President Roth together with prominent Wesleyan alumni for conversations about the value of liberal education — and current attacks on its premises and worth.

Delany spoke about a Wesleyan class on Proust that continues to be important to her decades later, and Weiner said that all his work comes out of the cultural immersion championed by the College of Letters.

President Roth's new book, Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters (Yale University Press) is generating lots of excitement – on the radio, on television and in the op-ed columns of the nation's most important papers. Audiences around the country are hearing about the value of liberal education and associating that with Wesleyan. And that's not the only contribution the book is making to our university.
